The Lava Block is a 14 acre micro-climate within Kamen Estate. Planted in 2008, it is the rockiest slope in the vineyard requiring extensive planting efforts. The wines grown on this parcel of the estate showcase a distinct and unique expression of Kamen Estate vineyard. Two acres of this parcel are dedicated to growing Cabernet Franc.
In 2018, Northern California experienced a dry winter. In May, after bud break, we received 6 inches of rain. Fast forward to the summer solstice in late June and we saw our first of many 100 degree days. The late rain combined with the heat created lush, fruitful vines. The heat calmed down after veraison and we had slow ripening and prolonged hang time which allowed the classic Kamen flavors to explode. All in all, a terrific vintage!
Give this wine a moment in the glass to reveal all of its beautiful layers. An aromatic abundance of brambly black fruit, raspberry liqueur, graphite, new leather gloves and gravel. Secondary notes of rhubarb, violets, chocolate foam, sandalwood and chaparral add to the beauty of this wine. The palate is powerful yet elegant and possesses extraordinary balance of fruit and silky tannins. Each sip is seamless and abundant leading to a resounding finish. Possibly the finest Cabernet Franc from the estate to date!
